I have four line and five line kites. I prefer the four line kites in the waves when a possible 5th line wrap is more prone to happen. I have been lucky enough to slide the 5th line off the kite the only time it rolled but can see how it could turn a session into a self rescue swim. If you have a 4 line kite just be sure to know where to grab to flag the kite out should you find yourself needing to completely de-power the kite. The only safety issue with most of the four line kites on the market with below the bar de-power is that the flag out locations are more than an arms reach from the rider. Just remember in either case that you can always cut away with your safety and leash and ditch the kite.

I'm a newby (able to stay upwind sometimes - haven't mastered a turn yet) and I own both (Naish Cult and North Rebel) and I like and dislike them both for different reasons. The fifth line on my North is great for depower and self landing BUT one time the wind completely died and the 5th line wrapped around the kite and I couldn't free it. I chose to reel myself into the kite without wrapping my lines and then proceeded to let go of the kite thinking I might have had my lines straight again. Like I said, I'm a newby, not that that's a real excuse because I knew better. In case it isn't obvious, let me say, DON'T EVER REAL YOUR SELF INTO THE KITE WITHOUT WRAPPING YOUR LINES AND MOST CERTAINLY DON'T LET GO AGAIN THINKING YOU CAN TAKE A SHORTCUT. continued…
continued… The result was some of the lines tightening up more than others and the kite powering up and doing constant kite loops. As well, some of the lines wrapped around my kite hook in bar as I let go. So now my lines were getting more and more wound around my hook as the kite looped. Pull the chicken loop you say? Did it - but lines are wrapped around the hook, fully tensioned, and my kite is pulling me down the lake (luckily I had about a kilometer of lake downwind until I would hit shore). continued…
continued… Pull my leash you say? Same result. Luckily my lines weren't wrapped around my body and (while I was travelling about 20 knots or more down the lake - estimated by a friend from shore) I was able to undo my harness and release from the kite. A boat eventually retrieved myself and the kite and, other than being a little shaken, everything was fine. FYI, I am a competitive swimmer and a triathlete and am VERY comfortable in the water. continued… As for the Cult (4 line) - I love the depower and the simplicity of the lines but if I have to put the kite down it has massive pull if I don't real it in quickly after releasing the chicken loop. The 5th line doesn't have this problem. The 4 lines are a bit easier to lay out and a bit quicker to setup but not that significant. SO overall, since I've learned my lesson, I don't see too much difference myself but when using the 5th line setup I am a little concerned b/c if the 5th line wraps I know it might decrease or end my session time because that means I have to self rescue to fix it. Your lines are always a mess after this too, so fixing it can take some time. Pulling your safety on any kite though usually causes a rats nest in your lines.

Most 5-line kites I've used are faster turning, and fly further toward the edge of the window. 4-liners are faster re-launching, simple to adjust/manage and if you are new to kiting (aren't confident with line management/emergency situations) then a 4-line is probably for you: self-landing shouldn't exist in a beginner's vocab.
My 5-line 12m is faster than my 8 SLE. For wake-style its great: it pulls hard and the line-tension is perfect for trying tricks to blind, passing the handle and loops. I even use it in fast, little waves when I might need a bigger kite that I have to work. Normally these conditions aren't a threat to crashed kites.
I use my 4-line SLE's in bigger waves because of the relaunch, and when its gusty: power management is super easy and no threat of a line wrapping. If you invert your kite: will it matter if its 4 or 5-line? Its never gonna fly the same either way…

kite krashes in the waves, gets inverted then starts looping itself constantly like 30 times dragging me out of the water and onto the beach, i pull my QR and guess what! The fucking Naish thing jammed but eventually let go. Then the 12m2 SLE slams itself on the beach but a guy took it and put it down on the beach…

Use five lines if safety is important to you. Use four lines if convenience is more important than living.
If there is anyone (including designers) who believes that a four line system is safer than a five line system, lets hook you in with 40+ mph wind and see if you can walk away from some 4-line "kitemares." I am shocked that in a country where someone sues a company because their coffee was too hot that it is not more common sue a kite company for negligence when so many safety systems do not work under stress.
