Throughout my travels as a Cabrinha team rider, I am frequently asked where the ever-elusive “best spot” happens to be. People anxiously await the story of the long dirt roads and well-kept secrets. My answer to this question never disappoints: “Well, I guess you haven’t been to Jupiter. Jupiter, Florida, that is.”
Jupiter represents everything I love about kiteboarding: insane shore break with fairly consistent onshore and sideshore winds, turquoise-blue tropical water and one of the most unique and friendly crews of local riders. Don’t be surprised when locals dive through head-high shore break waves to save your kite then offer you a hot cup of chili and possibly even give you relationship advice. Trust me, all of this is possible! A typical day might involve anywhere from 7- to 30-mile downwinders in more waves than you can count.
Jupiter has everything from shore breaks to reef breaks and even a secret spot with the weirdest wave you’ll ever see called “The Blue House.” You can ride down the face of this wave and see another coming at you from a totally different angle. On any windy day you’re likely to find pro riders such as Damien Leroy, Greg Norman, Melissa Gil and Matt Collins ripping it up at this beach.
If waves aren’t your thing, no worries. Jupiter has several sandbars throughout the area. Flat water is less than a 30-minute drive in any direction. A 12-meter and an 8-meter are pretty much the only kites you need there. You can get away with a short wetsuit in the winter, but a 3/2 longsuit seriously helps for those shore pound beatings!
Growing up in Jupiter spoiled me. I didn’t realize it was uncommon to have fresh showers, plenty of parking and three to four days a week of wind from early fall to late spring. If there isn’t wind, no problem — there always seems to be a small wave here or there perfect for a quick surf or stand-up paddle session.
If you happen to break down or need some new gear, Jupiter Kiteboarding is five minutes down the road on US-1. They have one of the most well-stocked kite shops in the country. Thanks to them, I, and several hundred other people, got into kiteboarding and have added a lot of action and color to my local beaches.
So if warm water, friendly people and great waves are your flavor, come check out my home spot in Jupiter. They don’t call it the Sunshine State for nothing!
