The Bruce Peninsula in Ontario, Canada, boasts three prime kiteboarding spots, all located within a few minutes of one another along the pristine blue waters of Lake Huron.
The first, Sauble Beach, is the windiest place in Ontario from May to October, making it a true kiteboarding mecca. In spring and fall, cold fronts bring northwest winds, and during summer, afternoon thermals from the southwest provide light-wind fun. Occasional storms generate decent waves, especially at the mouth of the Sauble River. Overall, spring and fall are the optimal times to kite Sauble Beach, while July and August should be avoided, as the beach is packed with tourists.
The peninsula’s two other kite spots include North and South Oliphant. North Oliphant, also known as Sandy Bay Cove, is the northernmost of the Oliphant Fishing Islands. The area is a flat-water haven, offering clean, shallow water and a large beach. It gets good on west and northwest winds and is ideal for beginners and experts alike. The bay here is large enough to accommodate more than 50 kiters, but it can get crowded in summer. This is the region’s most beginner-friendly beach, so you’ll find several kiteboarding schools using its waters.
There are two places to launch in North Oliphant. The first is Merry Street. The second is at the end of Spry Lake Road in front of Sandy Bay Cove Restaurant. Due to the increasing number of kiters, there have been calls to restrict access here, but local kiteboarders are working on a plan with the town to preserve access. This will more than likely involve a “no-kite zone” directly in front of the restaurant.
A few kilometers south is South Oliphant. Located at the end of Merry Street, between Lonely Island and Whiskey Island, the small bay holds about 20 kiters and works best on southwest winds. The shallow water and sandy bottom is perfect for all skill levels. Summers get busy with cottagers, and kiters should respect designated swim areas. The launch area is on the beach in front of the public washrooms and parking lot, which you’ll find in front of the old Oliphant dance pavilion.
