Attach Lines Properly

Here's a phrase for you to remember and never forget: FRONT AND CENTER, OUTBACK. Simply said, the center (chicken loop) lines always go to the front (leading edge) of the kite, while the outside lines (at the ends of the bar) always go to the back edge of the kite.

For this reason, it's very smart to make the front lines a different color from the back lines. A typical line and bar setup would have one side of the bar red and the other black; the red side always goes in your left hand. Run a red line from the end of the red side of the bar and a black line from the end of the black side of the bar. Make the two center lines both a third color but with different pigtail colors: the left line with red pigtails and the right line with black pigtails. This will clearly designate which side of the kite each line hooks to.

To make it even more kookproof, put a lark's head on the leading-edge pigtails on the kite and put knots on each end of the center lines. This forces you to hook the center lines to the leading edge and the outside lines to the back of the kite. Be sure to walk the lines out so no lines are crossed, and always visually assess the line attachments before sending the kite into the air.
