There is something mysterious about kiteboarding. Something esoteric grips people deep down, whether they’ve tried it or not. Whatever that mesmerizing wonder is, however, for most kiteboarders, the sport becomes not just a hobby or something new to try – it explodes into a life-changing passion, full of rapid learning, unimaginable excitement, soul-quenching pleasure and deep-rooted friendships. Kiteboarding is about a lot more than can be described, which accounts for why so many people become addicted to the sport the first time they see a kiter boost a floaty jump off of flat water, ride a wave without the need to paddle out or throw down wake-style tricks without a wake.
A large part of the appeal could come from the superhumanlike abilities kiteboarding gives you. Complete with a gravity-defying device that can lift you, float you and land you with a simple turn of a bar, kiteboarding is truly unique and unlike any other board sport. With the kite becoming a 100-foot extension of your body, it is as close as you can get to the feeling of flying, floating and gracefully landing without being in a dream-filled state of ecstasy.
But kiteboarding is about so much more than boosting 40-foot jumps to the moon, riding barreling overhead waves and stomping überpowered wake-style tricks. Kiteboarding is about more than being part of an incredible community that no other sport offers or harmonizing with the tranquility of nature or powering your way up a powder-covered hill and boosting airs all the way down. There is only one way to come to know what kiteboarding is all about: You have to experience it yourself.
Sure, kiteboarding can be challenging to learn (although its way easier than windsurfing), and you’ll pay some dues along the way, but with professional instruction from the outset and a few days on the water, you’ll master the basics in no time. And once you reach that point, you’ll be ready to explore the numerous, exciting avenues of kiteboarding. Who knows, it may not be too long before you find yourself cruising across the turquoise waters of a remote group of islands or swapping stories with your kiteboarding buddies after an epic session.
The following contains valuable information, but this guide should not replace lessons. Becoming a kiteboarder in a safe, fun and nonfrustrating manner requires instruction from a certified professional. Learning on your own is a very unwise path, as you are likely to get hurt or hurt someone else.
Learning from your friend who kiteboards will not cut it either. Just because he or she knows how to ride does not mean you will be taught without putting yourself and others at risk. unless your friend is a certified instructor, you will not learn everything you need to know. So please seek the proper knowledge you need to get into the sport in a safe and fun fashion: Take a lesson from a school.
From learning about all the gear, costs, safety and weather to lessons, schools, shops and what you can do to get ahead, you’ll find all this and more in the pages that follow. hopefully, it won’t be long before you experience what the passion and wonder of kiteboarding is all about.
