New trick for an old dog: Emerald Coast Kiteboarding owner Mark Rush learns a hand drag-backroll-kiteloop transition from Nick O’Bea of the Kitehouse in Key West.
1. Get your lead hand off the bar and go into this transition with some speed. Raise the kite between 1 and 12 for starboard tack or 11 and 12 for port tack. As the kite nears 12, plant your lead hand on the water’s surface, pull in on the bar for lift and lean back, raising your legs off the water all at one time.
2. Look over your lead shoulder; as the board starts to come around and roll and you can spot your landing, pull the bar in with your back hand in a fishing pole fashion. This will loop your kite and start to pull you downwind and out of your back roll. DO NOT let off your bar or you will do a low loop with nitrous. Loop it high so the kite pivots so you can ride out of it easier.
3. Point your board off the wind and toward the kite while extending your legs and hit your landing smooth and ride out of the loop.
4. This transition is easier than it looks! Nick O’Bea says to concentrate on two things: first, watch your hand go down to the water; and second, pull in hard on the bar when you’re half way around. Everything else is autopilot.
