US surf hero reached highest speed on kite board

Robby Naish “slowed down” to speed World Record More or less
by accident,

Hawaiian surf legend Robby Naish establishes a new World record
on a kiteboard. At the first stage of the “2003 World Speed Sailing
Challenge” on Canary Island the 40 years old multiple World
Champion reached 38,47 knots (71,03 km/h - 44,16 mph) beating the
former record of the Moroccan Malik Bouchenafa (38,28 knots).

Naish clocked the measured section in Arinaga during testing of
his new equipment. The fact, that he has set up the new record he
did not experience until Bj?rn Dunkerbeck informed him the same
evening in the hotel bar.

Says Naish: “I never really had the time to do speed, since I've
slowed down, I'm getting fast!”

Netherlands born Spanish resident Dunkerbeck failed only by a
heartbeat off 0,2 knots to beat the ten year old overall World
Speed Sailing record, establish by the Australian Trimaran “Yellow
Page Endeavour” with 46,52 knots (86,15 km/h, 53,55 mph).

Event organizer Peter Bogner is confident that the speed record
will eventually be broken at the next stages of the Speed Challenge
in either France or in New Zealand later this fall.
