The first ever Kite event in St Lucia, West Indies, took off March 23-25th with blue skies and driving wind. The St. Lucia Kite Festival competitors, hailing from eight different countries, tested themselves in the world-class conditions. Local Cabrinha team rider David Hastilow was joined by international Cabrinha superstar Damien Leroy for the 3-day festival.
Although not competing in the event, Damien wowed the crowds with a plethora of world cup style handle pass variations on his Xbow and Custom, showing the gathered crowds why he is one of the best in the world. Off the water, Damo was the center of attention for the local press and acted as Head Judge and announcer, imparting his knowledge upon the competitors and spectators.
Local Cabrinha Rider David Hastilow showed the other riders that he is a force to be reckoned with. Riding his Switchblade Kites and Custom Board, he comfortably made his way through the heats and found himself in the final. In the end he just missed out to a visiting rider from Guadeloupe, but in the true spirit of kitesurfing he went back on the water with Damo to put on a show for the 300+ crowd who had gathered.
On the second day of competition, the Caribbean's first ever Course race was run. Race co-coordinator Damien Leroy briefed the riders and the horn marked the start. After an unlucky start David Hastilow worked his way through the fleet enjoying the great upwind performance of his Switchblade Kite to take the win in the Men's Category.
The event marked the beginning for St Lucia competition and its success has already sparked interest for a repeat performance next year.
“The event was awesome, I lost out in the freestyle finals and came second to a great friend which is still cool, but the win in the Men's course racing was great. I need to give loads of thanks to Damo for coming down and helping out, much appreciated. Next year I'll be back and the event will be bigger and better.” David Hastilow: (Cabrinha Kites, The Reef, Transcend, Tapped.)
