Behind The Photo: Jesse Richman's Ho'okipa Wipeout

wipeout

This winter in Maui was crazy, with the most massive swells I have seen in years. On this day in late March, Ho’okipa was firing. This wave is usually off-limits to kiters, but the waves were so perfect and inviting, I couldn’t resist. I was so amped and wanted to make the day exciting, so I went out with my strapless board to push my limits. It was super-windy, blowing near 30 mph, but the waves still had nice shape. On this wave, I scored a few sick smacks and nice in-the-pocket turns, but then the entire wave walled up and started to close out. At this moment, I knew I was going to pay. Fortunately, I narrowly avoided a serious pounding by flying up the face and bailing out the back, making an epic exit. However, the next set was waiting for me out the back, so I got hammered anyway. But after I recovered, I went straight back out for more. — Jesse Richman
