Just north of Key West hides a kiteboarding oasis like no other. We discovered this spot during a downwinder that went blissfully awry, and found miles and miles of crystal-clear, knee-deep water filled with dolphins, manta rays and tropical fish. Since there are no obstacles (or witnesses) for miles around, you can try every trick in the book without fear of injury - at least to your ego.
BEST SEASON
Clear some space on your calendar October through May, when the easterly winds and cold fronts push this spot on average five days a week in all wind directions. In the summer bring your snorkel, 'cause you ain't kiting.
CONDITIONS
Expect at least 15- to 20-mph winds, and since there are no obstructions, it comes from all directions.
SETUP AND LAUNCH
You can get to The Flats one of two ways: Take a boat or swim. If you don't want to get wet, the Conch Harbor Marina (305-294-2933) rents boats for about $240 a day and will provide you with a map. The Kitehouse (305-797-0746, thekitehouse.com) does three trips a day (9 a.m., 1 p.m. and 3 p.m.) to get you out there. It's about $70 a rider, and they provide air tanks to fill up all your kites and any support you need.
LOCAL SHOPS
Kite Surf the Earth (888-819-5483, kitesurftheearth.com); Seven Kiteboarding (877-937-2359, sevensports.com); The Key West Kite Company (305-296-2535)
