With 24.5 miles of sandy beaches bordering the Atlantic Ocean, the Dewey Beach area has become quite the Mecca for kiteboarders in the Mid-Atlantic. You'll find most of the kiting spots within the state parks, and on any given day it's not uncommon to find riders from Washington, D.C., Northern Virginia, Baltimore, Philadelphia and New York.
BEST SEASON
March through June, and September through November, generate the best riding, with plenty of 12- to 25-knot days. Don't rule out June through August - although the winds are a little inconsistent, there is still a good chance of catching an afternoon thermal.
CONDITIONS
Most riders use 11- to 17-meter kites on a regular basis. While your larger-size kites will see more action, different weather patterns can generate enough wind to make you cry for Mommy, so bring your small kites too. This is especially true when low pressure forms or is present off the coast.
SETUP AND LAUNCH
