The small island of Aruba has three main kite beaches blessed with some of the most reliable winds in the Caribbean. As soon as Hurricane season ends in November, the trade-wind re-generates and Aruba is once again blessed with more of the 300 windy days. In the winter, winds are often in the upper teens while spring and summer usually see winds between 20 and 30 mph.
The most popular and most visible spot is Fishermen's huts, located just North of one of the busiest hotel strips in the Caribbean. Because of the reliable off-shore winds, glassy smooth Caribbean blue waters and thousands of tourists that are exposed to kiting for the first time, there are several kite schools operating here. The majority of them use Cabrinha kites thanks to Fiberworks, the local distributor. The most established school is Dare2Fly, part of the Vela Windsurf Resort that has been on the island for over 15 years. Their kite program is 6 years old now and they have a full line of the very latest Cabrinha Switchblades, Omegas and a selection of Crossbows available for the three IKO certified instructors and their students. Because of the off-shore winds, all lessons are taught with instructors following students around with support boats. Students also wear Headzone radio helmets so instructors are able to provide constant input during the lessons.
At Fishermen's Huts kiting is restricted to mornings until 10 and afternoons after 5. For similar conditions any other time of day, Arashi beach offers an alternative. Be sure not to kite alone here though since this is at the very tip of the island and the wind still comes off shore and you will be out of sight of the rescue boats at Fishermen's Huts. Since this launch puts you right at the edge of the island, you will also be able to kite the large swell that rolls by the island.
For a completely different experience, drive to the opposite end of the island to Boca Grande for some spectacular on-shore waves in a gorgeous secluded bay. The wind tends to be a bit lighter, so bring a 12 if you plan on kiting here. Kiting Boca is an awesome experience, so don't leave Aruba without a session there.
Popular accommodations include The Boardwalk Vacation Retreat, also home of Fiberworks, the only full service kite shop on the island with all the latest Cabrinha gear, and 5-star resorts like the Aruba Marriott. Aruba Marriott Ocean Club and Surf Club or a lower cost beach resort option like the Holiday Inn. All these are easy walking distance to Fishermen's Huts.
Aruba offers conditions that will suit complete beginners and challenge experts, and the island also offers world-class windsurfing, scuba diving, mountain biking as well as many family activities, a huge variety of restaurants and great night-life.
