Baja, Mexico

Los Barriles is a small town on the Sea of Cortez, one hour north of Cabo, on the southern tip of the Baja peninsula. The town is just big enough to make sure you have everything you need on a vacation while maintaining a unique Mexican small-town charm. Nice ocean-front resorts with pools, great restaurants, internet cafes, grocery stores and off course miles and miles of beautiful sandy beaches and a side-shore wind that creates spectacular conditions for all level kiters. From mid November through early March the wind strength varies from the low teens to the thirties and when the wind blows, a rolling swell provides endless entertainment for the expert riders, while still allowing beginner to get the hang of things.

The Dare2Fly kite center is based out of the Playa del Sol, but the coming season kite operations will be run from a new location, upwind of the hotel.  Experienced instructors that offer lessons for all levels, wide open beaches and the very latest Cabrinha gear for lessons and rentals make this one irresistible winter kite destination.

If you book your accommodations through Vela/Dare2Fly, you will have access to their full line of Specialized mountain bikes and daily guided rides along the 40+ miles of single track that kriss-cross the mountains around Los Barriles. They also have sea kayaks and snorkel gear available. Events are organized throughout the week as well.

Great other activities include horse-back riding and quad runner riding in the arroyo and the mountains, a visit to the hot springs, dolphin swimming in Cabo, surfing excursions, snorkeling trips,…

Accommodations obviously include the Playa del Sol, but for a bit more luxury, consider the Palmas de Cortez. Both have great pools, in case you plan on bringing non-kiters or kids. The pool at 'Play' is heated, but 'Palmas' has a huge Jacuzzi.

Flying to Cabo is easy with direct flights from San Diego, L.A., San Francisco, Portland, Phoenix and Houston. Dare2Fly can arrange for transport from the airport to Los Barriles or the more adventurous can take a bus.

I heard that La Ventana is also a great spot to kiteboard in Baja. Isn't the thermal wind in La Ventana way better than Los Barriles???
