The Cabrinha Team spent a week in Eleuthera, The Bahamas, in March 2007. The team chose Eleuthera for it's stunning leeward side Caribbean views, reputation for unabated Atlantic surf, it's proximity to the USA, and the sparse population. We chose Surfer's Beach for our home base. As it's name suggests, Surfer's Beach is famous for a fantastic wave that forms during any Atlantic swell. Picturesque bluffs overlook Surfer's beach with waves of sea grapes growing for miles in either direction. The beach itself has a gorgeous pink hue and the crystal clear Atlantic water opens a window to the coral reefs and natural sea grasses that thrive below the surface.
The Cabrinha Team was busy filming a portion of their new DVD, writing a travel story, and being filmed as part of a documentary on kitesurfing. Other than Surfer's Beach, the 110 mile long island offers what seems to be a near endless number of riding locations varying from completely flat water to great surf. What's more, the local fishing, be it with a rod and reel or in the water with a Hawaiian sling is some of the best The Bahamas has to offer. The Glass Window Bridge connects a road between the north part of the island with the central part. Only a skinny stretch of wave beaten rocks still connects the entire island straight beneath the bridge. The views are breathtaking as a panorama takes you from the powerful Atlantic Ocean over the 100' cliffs and land around to the gentle and crystal clear Caribbean Sea. This is a must see sunset location for Eleuthera. For more action, the Team went to Harbor Island, a small sandy key in the North that has been developed with fine hotels, restaurants and shopping. Harbor Island is accessible by water taxi. For those with less of a sense for adventure, Harbor Island might be the better bet. The local Bahamians are nothing but the most friendly and hospitable crowd you could ever imagine. Expect a trip to Eleuthera to bring you a lifetime full of memories like is has for us.
